American Cinematographer - September 2008 - (Page 102) Clubhouse News Cinematography Award was presented to him by actress Shirley Anne Field during the 22nd Annual BSC Summer Lunch, held at Pinewood Studios. Deakins accepted the award via telephone from Los Angeles, where he was in the midst of post on Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road and John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt and prepping the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man. Also nominated for the award were Seamus McGarvey, BSC for Atonement; Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC for Babel; Dick Pope, BSC for The Illusionist; and Peter Suschitzky, ASC for Eastern Promises. Stump Gets Reel David Stump, ASC (pictured above, at left) recently sat down with filmmakers Terry Flaxton and Scott Billups (above right) to discuss everything from the limits of human vision to the marketability of the terms “high definition” and “resolution.” The conversation was part of Reel People, a 30-minute program featured on the Reel Show Web site. Aimed at the film and television industries, the site features a mix of regular shows, equipment tests and reports from working sets, all presented by industry professionals. Poster on Display AFP Galleries in New York recently hosted “Around the Edges,” an exhibition of black-and-white photographs by Steven Poster, ASC and curated by critic Peter Frank. (One of the photos appears below.) Featuring a collection of documentary moments, “Around the Edges” represented Poster’s continued devotion to still photography some 40 years after he first took up a camera. In his notes for the show, Frank observes, “Poster’s approach captures that dream quality that puts you in the middle … and he does so without resort to camera shenanigans, surrealist trickery or the manipulation of anything more than the silver on the photo paper — and the willingness of the human mind to be taken along for a wild ride.” BSC Honors Deakins On July 20, Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC picked up another accolade for his work on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The BSC Gibson Elected BSC President Sue Gibson has been elected the British Society of Cinematographers’ first woman president. In 1992, the cinematographer — whose credits include the features Hear My Song and Secret Friends and the series Poirot and Jericho — became the first woman invited to join the Society, and in 2004, she was elected to the Board of Governors.
