Below: Ember’s mayor (Bill Murray) steps onto his balcony to address the city’s worried inhabitants. series In Treatment, the pilot for the CBS series Swingtown and the features Music and Lyrics and Nacho Libre (AC June ’06). “I hired Xavier to consult on the cinematography for Monster House because of his work on Before Night Falls [AC Jan. ’01], which I thought was extraordinarily soulful and emotionally lit and framed,” says Kenan. “I was working in a world of computers, where rigidity and perfection was the norm, and I felt Xavier’s soulfulness would do battle against the computer. We ended up having a real meeting of the minds, so when it came time to put my team together for City of Ember, I went straight to him.” For Grobet, City of Ember was “a dream project — an underground city where everything had to be lit. I had the freedom to create any kind of lighting I could imagine, and the light became a character in the movie.” Kenan and Grobet wanted to continue the floating, omniscient camera perspectives they had achieved in Monster House. “We had a blast doing those camera angles and moves,” recalls Grobet. “In a computer, it’s very easy to put a camera anywhere and pass it through a keyhole, for example. With a live-action movie, you have a camera with volume and mass, but Gil and I still wanted to move it as though we were playing with a computer.
