Below: The room housing the generator was a partially built set extended in post with CGI. “It was challenging to light because we were only working with certain pieces, like the small bridge and the bottom of the generator,” notes Grobet. “Thanks to the concept drawings, we knew the finished set would be 50 times taller!” them had extensive experience with large-scale productions such as the Harry Potter and James Bond series. The team included gaffer Chuck Finch, A-camera operator Peter Field, 1st AC Birgit Dierken and key grip David Appleby. City of Ember was shot in Super 35mm 2.40:1 entirely on Kodak Vision2 500T 5218, and the filmmakers used single-camera setups as often as possible. Arri Media in London supplied the production with two Arricam Lites, an Arricam Studio, an Arri 235, a full set of Cooke S4 prime lenses, 17-80mm and 24-290mm Angenieux Optimo zooms, and a 15.5-45mm Zeiss Lightweight Zoom. “The Cooke lenses have really good definition, and I think they work very well with the Super 35 process,” says Grobet. “I also needed all the stop I could get — only one scene in the movie happens outdoors!” To achieve many of the dynamic moves they had in mind, the filmmakers made extensive use of 30' and 50' Technocranes, both fitted with Scorpio Stabilized Heads. (A compact Alpha jib with a remote Key Head was used for smaller sets, according to Field.) Grobet eschewed on-camera filtration, preferring to control the look primarily through lighting and art direction. “We did use some smoke, and it took a little while to determine the right amount,” he recalls. “We came up American Cinematographer 43
