Chuck, our gaffer, suggested Light by Numbers — both he and David Kane, our production manager, had worked with it — and it gave us control of the whole stage from a single handheld device.” Mountain elaborates, “We would normally have at least three systems for that many stages, but because of the unusual nature of this set, we ran everything off one system. Sometimes I had the first unit filming with second unit on the radio and the visual-effects unit shooting in yet another cell. It got a little hectic with all three units going at once, but we pulled it off.” City of Ember opens with a prologue showing the builders of the city completing its construction and preparing a time capsule that contains instructions for how to leave after 200 years have elapsed. The filmmakers made the scene a strong contrast to the rest of the picture. “The whole idea was to go super-clean and bright white, the opposite of Ember,” says Grobet. “The set was designed with a laboratory-like feel, which created a completely different environment. I lit it all white with soft light to make it look really clean. We used a number of space lights through diffusion high above the set to create very flat lighting, and we corrected the light in printing to a cool, bluish white to make it look even more sterile. In the big hallway, we used fluorescent lights corrected to match.” The story then shifts to the present day, more than two centuries later, and we learn that Ember has fallen into disrepair and
