Memoirs of a Spook riors. “That also had to do with keeping things simple and lighting with only one source, which you often see in the shot.” As the characters’ missteps continue to intertwine, Harry and Linda eventually meet online and arrange to see a movie titled Coming Up Daisy, starring Dermot Mulroney. Inside the movie theater, as Harry and Linda yuck it up, a 20'x12' frame of Full Grid with Nine-light Mini-Brutes behind it simulates the light reflecting off the screen and onto the audience. The location was also filled with a bit of smoke to make the Xenon projector beam visible. Linda meets her dates in person along a promenade in Washington, where the filmmakers hoped for sunny days but instead consistently met with overcast skies that ultimately emphasize the morose existence of the middling characters. Because of restrictions in D.C., the crew was unable to lay dolly track for Linda’s walks through the park. “We had to shoot it with a Steadicam,” Lubezki explains, noting that Peter Rosenfeld handled operating duties at the location. “It doesn’t matter, but it would have been nice to lay track and make it very graphic.” When his schedule carried him away after principal photography, Lubezki passed the torch to Robert Yeoman, ASC, who shot a few pickups in Los Angeles involving one of Harry’s infidelities. Of his brief encounter with the Coens, Yeoman says, “They got to set before anybody else. That’s their style; they like to show up early and get the vibe. They’re fun to work with — very low-key, friendly and collaborative.” Harry and Linda laugh at Dermot Mulroney’s onscreen antics in Coming Up Daisy, a briefly glimpsed filmwithin-the-film. “Usually, I like to work with only one stock,” he continues, “and on this film, it was [Kodak Vision2 Expression 500T] 5229.
