New Products & Services 1 Million Watts Luminys Systems Corp. has unveiled the 1-million-watt SoftSun, a unique lighting setup for high-speed applications. Bouncing the light — provided by eight 130K fixtures — off an optically correct overhead reflector surface, the new SoftSun evenly covers a 20'x20' area with 38,000 footcandles of soft, shadowless light. The system idles at 20,000 watts from house power, and in 1 millisecond, the light level rises to 1 million watts, sustainable for 20 seconds. A battery bank provides the power for the high level, eliminating the need for a large generator or other power source. The lamps run in DC mode and have been tested to be flicker-free up to 100,000 fps. The system is computer-operated via a touch-screen interface. The 1-million-watt SoftSun is installed at Luminys’ Hollywood facility. Smaller, portable versions of this system are also available for rent from Luminys. True Blue Fixtures Combining extensive research, feedback from lighting professionals and advances in technology, Arri has designed the True Blue series of six lamp 84 October 2008 heads for studio and location lighting. Pressure die-cast and extrudedaluminum components have reduced the overall weight of the True Blue fixtures without any sacrifice in quality or durability, and many components offer greater strength and resistance to corrosion than Arri’s original line of lighting units. Arri’s cross-cooling system reduces lamp-housing temperature by 25 percent and lens temperature by 17 percent; with special air channels built into the aluminum extrusion, a constant stream of air passes around the Fresnel lens and into the lamp head, regardless of the tilt angle. At the heart of the True Blue concept is a redesigned stirrup and improved tilt lock. The stainlesssteel friction disc locks the lamp head securely, even with the largest Chimera. To make lamphead balance even easier, the stirrup mounting slides and can be adjusted to counterbalance all accessories. The new extrudedaluminum stirrup is stronger, lighter and less bulky but still permits full fixture rotation, and its soft contour makes it comfortable to carry. The new Stegmaier connector and strain relief rotate to allow the cable orientation to be quickly adjusted for hanging or stand mounting. Improved barn doors are stronger and less susceptible to bending, and a new hinge design maintains constant tension that can be easily adjusted. Routine maintenance and repair are easier, with fast, simple access to all internal components, and cleaning is made effortless by smooth lamp-housing surfaces.
