Willis' impressive list of
credits also includes Pennies From
Heaven (1981), a dark-toned musical directed by Herbert Ross and
starring Steve Martin (top) and
Bernadette Peters (middle right),
and The Paper Chase (1973), a legal
drama directed by James Bridges
and starring John Houseman
(middle left) and Timothy Bottoms
(bottom).
One of the most elaborate
musical sequences in Pennies was set
in a huge bank set built by renowned
production designer Ken Adam.
"That set was big," Willis recalled.
"The lighting was basically all done
from overhead, with staggered rows
of sky pans. There were two huge
black 'cutters' hanging beneath the
lights, and these ran for the length
of the bank on both sides. The ropes
on the cutters were crisscrossed so
they could be pulled inward to trim
the light off the walls; this left most
of the light in the center of the set.
The walls were still hit by some
diffused light that made it through
the cutters, and there were also some
practical art-deco fixtures on the
walls themselves. The set also
featured these big, backlit windows
that gave it dimension from side to
side."
On The Paper Chase, Willis
employed a brilliantly simple strategy to visually convey the intimidation of the first-year law student
facing the formidable professor: "In
the early scenes, when Bottoms is
feeling overmatched, I always
showed him in a wider long shot
amid all the other students in the
class, so he looked like this smaller
figure in the crowd. Then, when we
cut to Houseman, it was a giant
close-up that filled the screen with
his daunting presence. Over the
course of the movie, as the law
student became more confident, I
slowly adjusted the actors' sizes on
the screen until, by the end of the
movie, they were roughly equal."
