so well that we used it several times
throughout the film for that effect. We
also shot a full moonrise with that lens.
The moon is bigger than full frame; all
the craters and crevices are visible."
The XL2s were loaded with three
different Kodak Vision3 stocks: 50D
5203 for most day exteriors; 250D 5207
for scenes later in the day and shots that
required a high T-stop, such as those
made with the longer zooms and the
2,800mm; and 500T 5219 for interiors
as well as night exteriors. Walker overexposed each stock by 2⁄3 of a stop. "I did
that on everything: day, night, interior
and exterior," she notes. The only filters
used were a range of NDs. "I didn't use
polarizers because I didn't want an artificially enhanced 'postcard' look," the
cinematographer adds.
Each shooting day began with
traveling an hour to an hour-and-a-half
from Parachilna to the day's location -
on mostly dirt tracks - in a convoy of
four-wheel-drive vehicles. "Everything
was transported in small flat-tray vehicles," says Walker. "It all had to be
completely offloaded from the trucks
and broken down to fit into the vehicles
- the 23-foot crane, Fisher dollies, our
two main camera kits and lenses. Then
it all had to be unloaded and set up
when we arrived. By the time that
happened, we could shoot for six or
seven hours, until last light; then we
broke it all down again and drove back
to Parachilna in the dark on dirt roads
marked by cones."
EFilm Australia provided the
production with DVD dailies, but
Walker preferred viewing the 30-40
high-resolution stills that dailies colorist
Kieran Bleakley emailed her each day.
"The pub at Parachilna had very slow
and sporadic Internet," the cinematographer recalls. "I had to communicate
with Kieran by email or phone as best I
could, but his stills from the telecine
were great." The negative was scanned
at 4K resolution and the final timing
was done with colorist Olivier Fontenay
at EFilm on Autodesk Lustre. Walker
adds, "I kept the integrity of the images
on the negative by shooting at the right
