Davidson's arduous journey is
punctuated by recollections of significant events in her childhood. For these
scenes, Walker strove for a palette
inspired by the poetic vibrancy of
Kodachrome reversal film. "We wanted
the flashbacks to be separate from the
rest of the imagery, and that specific
color and contrast evokes memories of
the past," the cinematographer explains.
The flashbacks were all shot handheld,
often from the dolly, at 120 fps.
Tracks is more an existential study
of Davidson than a pragmatic story of
survival in the desert. "In a sense, the
physical aspects of the journey aren't as
important as the emotional journey,"
says Walker. "That's the story we are
telling. The film is about a quest for
complete solitude and the emotional
dignity required to achieve that."
As her trek comes to an end, one
shot sums up Davidson's experience.

Captured with the 30mm lens, the
tableau shot pans across the landscape
as the dawn light rakes the ground,
backlighting Wasikowska and the
camels in a classically balanced composition. "That image has a very open,
wide-angle view," Walker explains. "It's
consciously a very different shot from
the rest of the movie [in order] to say
'she's at the end of her journey, that huge
expanse she traversed. It's a new dawn.
She made it.'"
