for a few days, but after stressing my past
set experience as well as my ASC
connection, I was able to get the gig. It
was an arduous shoot, [filled] with challenges - and it turned out to be the
project I am most proud of in my career.
My experience working in the industry
for years as well as the support of the
ASC members helped me navigate
those challenges and create something
wholly believable and true."
Todd M. Duym also found that
the Master Class provided a major boost
for his professional work. "The Master
Class was such a transformative experi74

ence," he says. "The week at the
Clubhouse has truly had a profound
effect on my career. Each cinematographer offered a unique perspective on the
craft, and that opened my eyes to different ways of approaching cinematography. It gave me the courage to be brave
and to create more engaging images."
The year after Duym attended
the Master Class, he continues, "I
received a nomination at the Canadian
Society of Cinematographers Awards
for a Microsoft piece in the Branded
Content category. This year, I won the
CSC's Commercial Cinematography
American Cinematographer

Award for a Lexus spot. I've also joined
the Murtha Skouras Agency. It's
humbling - so many wonderful things
have happened since I took the Master
Class. I'm truly thankful for the experience."
Teren, who graduated from the
Academy of Performing Arts
Bratislava's Cinematography and
Photography department, also notes the
positive impact of his participation.
"The experience gave me more self
confidence to start my own projects as a
cinematographer," he says. "It opened
the possibility for me to shoot a featurelength World War II drama, where I
had the opportunity to apply the knowledge I acquired."
He continues, "I also learned
about the complexity of the cinematographer's job, how to prepare myself for
projects - and how to search for inspiration in art, from Renaissance paintings
to modern photography. As the son of a
painter, I now see cinematography as
painting with light, and painting as
telling stories with pictures. In my work,
I try to connect the world of art and the
world of technology while still being
efficient." As a result of taking the
Master Class, Teren was also chosen as a
representative of the Slovak Association
