Minutes later, we arrive at the
western gate to Fort McPherson, 330
acres of which now serve as home to
Tyler Perry Studios. Just past the gate is
a large gray office building, which
formerly housed administrative offices
for the U.S. Army Forces Command
and now serves as the base of operations
for Manhunt's FBI Unabom Task Force
in San Francisco. We park around the
back and access the building through a
service entrance. The main floor is a
musty, labyrinthine ruin of desks, office
chairs and filing cabinets; the carpet is
thin and drab, and the low drop ceiling
is a checkerboard of blown fluorescent
bulbs and missing tiles.
Then we arrive at the set, a
cavernous atrium in the center of the
building, lit with daylight ambience
from a fourth-floor skylight. The
carpets are still drab, but here they're
clean, and all the overhead fluorescent
fixtures hum with soft white light.
There are whiteboards, and at least a
dozen desks - with more off to the
side, next to offices and conference
rooms - each decorated with some
combination of books, notepads, stacks
of carbon-copy paper, IBM Selectric
typewriters, and computers with bulky
CRT monitors running Windows 95. It
looks like All the President's Men for the
Clinton era.
