ACCE Convention Notebook 2008 - (Page 53) ACCE YEAR IN REVIEW By ACCE Chairman, Douglas Kinsinger, CCE and ACCE President, Mick Fleming From left to right: Mick Fleming, ACCE President; Douglas Kinsinger, CCE, 2007–2008 ACCE Chairman of the Board The last 12 months have been quite a rollercoaster ride! Sometimes it’s felt like we’re all sitting in the front row of the first car, holding our hands in the air as we alternately ride into the depths of issues that have been expounded upon or mocked by political pundits, economists and late night talk show hosts; or climb to the heights of success in our communities and regions with economic, environmental and community wins. These wins have provided welcome relief to the rides we’ve taken on sloping tracks and upside-down loops like the housing slump and credit retraction. The resulting vertigo isn’t abated by our political leaders. Everything about this dramatic political-economic year has been covered ad nauseum in the media. These turbulent times impact your chambers and communities…as well as the American Chamber of Commerce Executives. So what has been happening over the past year at the only national association dedicated 100 percent to helping you succeed in leading businesses and leading communities? Well, we’ve built shiny new coaster tracks and replaced the classic wooden rails with maglev. You can now ride the train with your colleagues as well as access custom-built single cars of new services designed just for you. Money and Members Matter While ACCE’s educational programming has included hefty slices of membership development content since our merger with NAMD in 2004, the industry has clamored for still more sales-focused training. The Membership Development Division Advisory Board has driven program development and delivery in the sales area over the last 12 months, especially through the Convention and DIALogue teleseminars. Planning is underway for an exciting stand-alone event, to be held in the fall, dedicated to membership development and sales. The Profession’s Pinnacle The prestige and strength of the Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) program continues to increase, which in 2008 has resulted in the largest class of candidates ever seen. With search firms and compensation committees looking more and more at professional credentials, the CCE program will continue on to new heights. Professional Development Changing the Scenery Record attendance numbers for last summer’s meeting in California, as well as rave reviews from participants, inspired us to take a fresh look at the format, schedule and content of the Convention, resulting in an even better model for 2008. The “Innovate” Convention in July 2008 will be more focused, more connected, more flexible and more fun. A New Adventure in L.A. Following enthusiastic endorsement by the ACCE Board of Directors and membership, a team was formed to create a new world attraction—the gathering of more than 2,000 chamber professionals from across the globe. The American Team, composed of ACCE staff and Board, the Los Angeles (CA) Area Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Council on International Business and the U.S. Chamber, has gone head-to-head with strong rivals from other Western Hemisphere cities and has crafted the most powerful bid the World Chambers Federation has ever seen. The proposal was delivered in person to the WCF Board on June 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, and the International Chamber of Commerce Board decision is expected in October 2008. Building New Tracks By popular demand, ACCE’s curriculum has expanded to include additional areas of chamber and community leadership. Courses in regional strategies, public policy, economic development, event planning, tax compliance and other topics have been added. ACCE Convention 2008: INNOVATE! 53
