Its height and unique shape posed significant engineering chal- lenges in
supporting the massive structure on weak geologic formations, while at the
same time addressing the incidence of typhoons and earthquakes common to
the region. The project team created a structural design that uses a
steel-con- crete composite system capable of withstanding these extreme
conditions, while accommodating its distinctive bamboo stalk and pagoda
shape. The mega-frame has a central- braced core connected to several
perimeter super columns. Structural damping is supplemented by a 727-ton
sphere of stacked steel plates hanging from the 92nd floor, which uses the
building's natural motions to push and pull giant shock absorbers. Standley
