Our cover interview with Congressman James Oberstar (D-Minn.), chairman of the powerful House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, highlights the important water legislation now winding its way through Congress as well as the need to find a solution to the anticipated shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund. The convention is also drawing an unprecedented turnout for the 2007 Engineering Excellence Awards— the “Academy Awards of the Engineering Industry.” The EEA award winners are featured inside this magazine. This magazine also reports on how engineering firms are working to help make our ports more secure, as part of our country’s response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. In addition, three multi-project case studies demonstrate creative, environment-friendly and cost-effective solutions to treating wastewater and solving drought and capacity problems. As this issue goes to press, we hear the tragic news at Virginia Tech. The entire ACEC family joins in expressing heartfelt condolences to the families involved. Jeff M. Daggett David A.
