JULY / AUGUST 2007 Chris Matthews and George Will, two of the nation’s most respected political and social observers, electrified Convention attendees with their insightful perspectives on the upcoming presidential election and the state of the American consciousness. Matthews said Sen. Hillary Clinton would earn the Democratic nomination for president and have a strong chance at becoming the nation’s first woman president. “[Sen. Barack] Obama is the romantic hero,” he said. “But Hillary is in great shape to win this thing.” “The Republican nominee is still a cloudy picture, although [former Massachusetts Gov.] Mitt Romney is gaining momentum,” he added. Matthews also called the war in Iraq “a stupid mess” and predicted a dramatic change in U.S. involvement if there is no improvement soon in the current situation. “If we’re still taking casualties in September, then I don’t see how the administration can keep selling the war to the American public.” Will warned that America suffers from an “entitlement mentality created by a welfare state” that he says discourages innovation, imagination and self-reliance.
