NEWS & NoTES Survey: Engineer Shortage Is Industry’s Top Concern worsening engineer shortage is the most pressing concern facing ACEC member firms today—and significantly will affect how companies conduct business for the next 20 years, findings from the ACEC 2007–2008 Design & Construction Industry Trends Survey reveal. The survey, which includes statistics and trends for business performance and markets reported by more than 200 ACEC member firms, was the subject of a special session at the recent ACEC Convention. The results shed light on a range of issues, including the A impact of the so-called “baby boomer” retirement on the engineering industry, turnover and attrition for technical and professional staff and the lack of college graduates choosing engineering as a profession. “We are seeing a decrease in enrollments in many engineering programs … and it is worrisome,” said Jill Holcomb, ACEC’s manager of education and technical support and a presenter at the Convention. More than 40 percent of ACEC member firms said the engineer shortage was the most important issue facing firms over the next five years, ahead of ownership transition (26 percent) and increased competition (13 percent), among other hot-button issues. When asked to identify the top three economic, political, social and environmental challenges facing the industry over the next 20 years, 39 percent again said the engineer shortage, compared with infrastructure funding (24 percent) and changing government regulations (16 percent). To ameliorate the growing shortage of engineers, the Council is advocating expansion of the H-1B visa program to acquire more engineering talent from abroad, along with education measures such as increased scholarship opportunities to encourage more young Americans to pursue engineering careers.
