Engineering Inc. - September/October 2007 - (Page 7) n oxer B tapped Sen. Hillary Clinton, currently a leading Democratic candidate for president in 2008, to chair the Senate Subcommittee on Superfund and Environmental Health. n ccording to the Monitor report, A “some Democrats, including Sen. Boxer, want to reinstate ‘polluter pays’ taxes … Those taxes once generated about $1.5 billion a year, according to a [June 2006] report from the Center for Progressive Reform.” For engineering firms involved in site cleanups, a surge by the Democrats might be a blessing in disguise. Table One offers an overview (from a 2004 EPA publication) of the number of sites in need of cleanup. Most of the sites are not part of Superfund. Note: The total cost is in the hundreds of billions! We design, investigate, and rehabilitate building enclosures and structures of all types. We are looking for highly qualified candidates interested in working on challenging and exciting projects in an environment that promotes employee growth and satisfaction. We have five offices: Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. According to a 2006 article in Environmental Business Journal (EBJ), the U.S. “remediation and redevelopment industry” is worth roughly $7 billion. “[Within] the last year to two years, the opportunities for taking impaired properties and returning them to productive use have been flowing.” EBJ’s annual analysis of remediation revenues reflects the trend. “What we once called ‘privately instigated cleanups’ accounted for 10 percent of revenues in 1990; what we now call ‘redevelopment cleanups’ will account for one-third of more than $7 billion in remediation revenues in 2006,” the article said. These so-called “redevelopment cleanups” reportedly contributed to remediation growth of nearly 6 percent in 2005—“the highest growth rate in the U.S. remediation market since 1992.” The subsequent battles of environmental need versus political will versus federal funding will play out further in the coming months. And the engineering industry is anxiously awaiting the results.
