occur, that's fine too, because-with a healthy perspective-they will teach you something. * Check in. recognize when you are becoming anxious, depressed, or stressed. ask questions that will get you back in touch with your true calling. You will see that fears and "dis-ease" are arising out of the role you are playing, your fear of rejection, or your anxiety at being revealed as a charlatan. consider asking some of these questions when you experience negative feelings: What is it about this situation that is making me so uncomfortable (anxious, angry, etc.)? Why am i giving people the power to upset me? and why am i allowing it to get worse through my attachments? What is the worst thing that could happen if i said or did ________? What is the most helpful action i can take in this instance to learn about myself and the people and situation at hand? Final Comments Bennis (2009) notes: Becoming a leader is not an orderly path. It is a fitful, often painful process that involves wrong turns before great strides are made. Usually some transformative event or experience is central to finding one's voice, learning how to engage others through shared meaning, and acquiring the other skills of leadership. . . . Instead of simply enduring hard times, we have to seize every opportunity for transformation they afford. resilient leaders are equipped to transform organizations, but they cannot do it alone. they need healthy teams that are willing to challenge the status quo and rebound after stressful or traumatic events. Making even minor adjustments in heightening self-awareness, recognizing alone time, employing mindfulness, and nurturing a healthy perspective will have a life-changing impact on our leadership style as well as the system, employees, and patients we serve. What can be better than that? References Bass, B. 1990. Handbook of Leadership, 3rd ed. new York: free Press. Bennis, W. 2009. On Becoming a Leader. Philadelphia, Pa: Basic Books. eisler, r. 2008.
