The collection of commentaries in this issue of Frontiers shows
the positive impact that hospital and health system leaders can have on a learning culture when they collaborate on behalf of the patients and families they are
privileged to serve. lakeland regional Health Systems is optimistic about its future as it continues to create purpose across the organization, thereby developing
a resiliency that inspires us to fulfill lakeland regional's 2020 vision:
* Delivering nationally recognized care,
* Strengthening our community to become the healthiest in florida, and
* Advancing the future of healthcare.

Mr. van gorder is correct that "real culture comes from the middle of the
organization." at lakeland regional, we believe much of our success has evolved
from the transformation of our nursing staff. However, this effort is not limited
to clinical staff; transformation is taking place organization-wide. each of our
4,500 employees as well as the board of directors will receive three hours of
learning related to our culture of caring during this fiscal year.
We agree with Mr. Helwig's call for empirical data. although we are just now
completing year 1 of this transformation, empirical evidence supports its success. for the past five years, lakeland regional has partnered with the gallup
polling organization to measure employee engagement. not only was this year's
engagement score the highest since we began measuring it five years ago, but it
was significantly higher than in years past. While we did not achieve our goal of
reaching the 90th percentile in the nation for employee engagement, we expect
more improvement in the future.
our organization's purpose of caring for ourselves, for our patients and families, for each other, and for our community sets the stage for a resilient culture
defined by purpose; passion; and a healthy work, spiritual, and life balance. Such
purpose, when combined with the strategy of Delivering, Strengthening, and
advancing, will sustain and grow lakeland regional by positively affecting the
health of our entire community.
our aim is to become nationally known as a catalyst for transforming healthcare for an entire region. We will have arrived at our envisioned future when
lakeland is known as the healthiest town in florida.
