As that situation improves, caregivers and
researchers must work together, redoubling our efforts to make sure the more
inclusive healthcare system we are building is also safe, comfortable, and equally
effective for all those who need it.

connect disparities with effective response
models, build on successful efforts already
under way, learn from promising practices, and emphasize collaboration over
placing blame.
My organization, CHA, will continue
to research and report on disparities and
convene conferences and webinars on the
topic. CHA's members-along with other
hospitals and healthcare organizations-
can also illustrate a clear link between
disparities work and protecting the fundamental dignity of every person.
No one should walk into an emergency
department with a fear greater than the
medical one that brought them there. No
one should visit their doctor and hope they
can understand and communicate. No
one should receive substandard care-or
experience inferior outcomes-because of
their skin color or cultural tradition.
On behalf of CHA, I thank the authors
of the feature articles for the great work
they are doing to advance a healthcare
system that serves everyone equally and
effectively. Disparities represent a problem
and a challenge. There is a tremendous
opportunity here as well-to provide better, more compassionate, more culturally
sensitive care.
The Affordable Care Act is making
great strides in eliminating the unforgivable reality of millions without healthcare.
