I ntervIew Several leadership changes have taken place in the past year, but they have been marked by a lot of continuity as well. Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, the new president and CEO of ACHE, has been the organization’s executive vice president and chief operating officer for nine years. Prior to that she served as COO of the American Society of Actuaries for three years, and before that she was on staff here at ACHE for eight years. Dr. Jessee, at MGMA, was replaced by Susan Turney, MD, FACMPE, a physician and former chairman of MGMA; Dr. Clarke, of HFMA, was replaced by Joseph J. Fifer, FHFMA, CPA, a former chairman of that organization; and Dr. Silbaugh, of ACPE, was replaced by Peter Angood, MD, FRCS(C), FCCM, a longtime member of ACPE. So while leadership has changed in the healthcare association world, these organizations should experience little disruption. The CEOs of these six associations get together about every six months; we do talk and interact frequently. A key area of mutual interest and cooperation is in healthcare management competencies. MGMA, HFMA, AONE, HIMSS, and ACHE all have their own similar competency exams. For ACHE this is the Board of Governors Examination in Healthcare Management. ACPE has a somewhat different exam to reflect its particular membership. The associations have formed a consortium representing 140,000 healthcare management professionals known as the Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA) (http://www.healthcareleadershipalliance.org). An important result of this collaboration is the HLA Competency Directory, which can be used by healthcare organizations as a model by which to frame the competencies expected of practicing healthcare executives. The second important area where we work collaboratively is in education. For example, we have held joint presentations with ACPE at the ACHE Congress on Healthcare Leadership. That presentation is then repeated at ACPE’s annual meeting. We conducted a similar pair of presentations in 2012 with MGMA. HIMSS has also presented at Congress, and ACHE has joined all of these professional societies in other activities. We each have our own unique constituencies for which we provide education, but we are also cognizant that our members are occupants of the C-suite and that they should be oriented together in some operational areas. The third key area of mutual cooperation is publishing. Of the six organizations, ACHE is the only association that operates a large publishing division. In addition to our own publications, Health Administration Press produces some of the books published by the other associations. These are the big three areas of mutual cooperation and collaboration: competencies, education, and publishing. Another area that we have begun to work together on is internal process improvement. ACHE is very committed to the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award application model, and all six professional societies are committed to process improvement. We are beginning to benchmark with each other on various performance indicators.
