Interview With Marna P. Borgstrom,
FACHE, President and Chief Executive
Officer, Yale New Haven Health System,
and Chief Executive Officer,
Yale-New Haven Hospital, Connecticut
M
arna P. Borgstrom, FACHE, is president and CEO of Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), based in New Haven, Connecticut, and CEO of Yale-New Haven
Hospital. YNHHS is composed of Bridgeport, Greenwich, and Yale-New Haven
hospitals and the Northeast Medical Group, a physician foundation. Yale-New Haven
Hospital is the 1,541-bed primary teaching hospital for Yale School of Medicine.
Ms. Borgstrom began her career at Yale-New Haven Hospital more than 35 years
ago as a postgraduate fellow. She subsequently held various staff and management
positions, assuming the role of executive vice president and chief operating officer in
1994 and her current position in 2005. She serves on a number of national and local
boards of directors, including VHA Inc. in Dallas, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the Coalition to Protect America's Health Care, and the Connecticut Hospital Association. She also chairs the administrative board of AAMC's
Council of Teaching Hospitals.
A lecturer in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Yale School
of Public Health, Ms. Borgstrom earned a master of public health degree in hospital
administration from Yale School of Medicine and a bachelor of arts degree in human
biology from Stanford University.
Ms. Borgstrom has received several awards for her community contributions,
including the American Hospital Association Grassroots Champion Award, the AntiDefamation League Torch of Liberty Award, the Greater New Haven Chamber of
Commerce Community Leadership Award, and Business New Haven Person of the
Year. In 2011, she was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree by Quinnipiac University and, in January 2014, an honorary doctor of business administration degree from the University of New Haven.
Dr. O'Connor: You have spent your entire professional career at Yale New Haven
Health System, a large and complex organization. During your time there, have you observed
changes in the culture of the organization? In an era of fundamental healthcare transformation, do you see any challenges or cultural shifts that will be required to align with the new
healthcare environment?
Ms. Borgstrom: There are many challenges in the healthcare environment, but I
think the core value has been, and must continue to be, about the patient and about
