professional residence hall director reflected on how she learned about problem solving as a student leader: We sat there and it took us hours but I think in the end we came up with something that really stuck and was very meaningful to what we wanted to do. I don’t think we could have achieved anything without having all those steps. This participant explained the importance of not rushing to a solution, a tendency she has seen in supervisors since leaving college. Two other participants reflected upon how they often see their work colleagues grasp for easy solutions before comprehensively analyzing the true nature of the problem. Hall government experience also taught student leaders about how to interact more effectively with people who have different points of view. During interviews, participants shared stories from their community council experiences about resolving differences through discussion and compromise, skills paramount for their current success. One participant reflected back on her strong-willed nature and how she learned the importance of “being flexible to different people’s work styles and values and not overpowering them in any way.” Several participants spoke of learning the value of sharing diverse viewpoints in building the strength of a work group.

opment of year-long (or longer) relationships with students—other council members—who were different from them. For example, the Latina alumna working in a daycare commented, “Not everybody thought the same way that I did, and I think that’s something that definitely changed in me. I always thought people should think this way; that definitely had to change.” These council experiences were used by the participants as a laboratory to test out their skills and values, where they could place themselves in a situation that required working with peers and practicing leadership. This experimental environment allowed students to try on different styles and ways of leading and following in groups.

Appreciation	 of	 difference. A significant value developed through hall government participation was an appreciation for personal and cultural difference. For individual participants, this ranged from a deeper knowledge of multicultural issues to an understanding that individual values must be truly appreciated and not simply tolerated on a team in order to achieve long-term group effectiveness. For example, one participant from a rural background noted, “There are lots of different people with different viewpoints of the world, whether they’re coming from Texas, New York, or Germany. I learned that [success came from] not really what I think; it was really how we all look at the world.”
These governance experiences often led participants to new insights about themselves and their skills. Placed in a challenging environment where not everyone agreed, they were required to learn a respect for those different from themselves and for the different qualities that others brought to the team.
