The present study suggests that faculty and staff receive several important intrinsic benefits but few extrinsic ones from their involvement in LLPs .

Consultation opportunities. The results indicate that staff (66.43%) were significantly more likely to act as a consultant to assist with community issues and projects than were faculty (44.53%). One possible explanation for the findings is that student affairs staff are performing community consultations as part of their daily work. Assisting residents with roommate conflicts and confronting community standard violations are often part of the job requirement for staff but not for faculty. These findings may reflect that faculty are performing these tasks less often since the student affairs staff are already completing them. Another explanation may relate to the time of the day when these consultations occur. If conflicts occur in the evenings and nights, most faculty are no longer on campus or in the residence halls to assist. For student affairs staff who work and live in the residence halls, their availability for these after-work hour events may be greater due to proximity.

faculty and staff shared the same top three benefits, although in different order. These top three benefits included (a) received allotments for expenses associated with inviting students to a meal or other social activities, (b) received opportunities to participate in research on learning communities, and (c) received opportunities to participate in professional conference presentations. The remainder of this section will discuss the four statistically significant differences that were found. Allotments for social expenses and meal plans. The results indicate that faculty (50%) were more likely to receive allotments for expenses associated with inviting students to a meal or other social activities than were student affairs staff (30%). The results also indicate that faculty (17.97%) were more likely to receive a partial meal plan or dining dollar allotment than were the student affairs staff (9.29%). A possible explanation for these findings is that meal plans may already be part of the student affairs staff benefits package. Because staff who work and live in the residence halls receive this benefit anyway, they may not indicate this as a benefit received through their participation in the LLPs. Reduction in work load. The results indicate that faculty (11.72%) were more likely to receive a reduction in their teaching load or collateral assignments than were the student affairs staff (2.86%). A possible explanation for this finding is that student affairs staff are involved in LLPs as part of their daily work. Staff who work and live in the residence halls may participate in the LLPs because they are housed in their building, and participation is often a job requirement for staff. Additionally, faculty who receive a teaching load reduction may represent a department that funds and supports

Differences in the Extrinsic Benefits for Faculty and Staff
A high level of agreement occurred between the faculty and staff participants. Of the 15 questionnaire items related to extrinsic benefits, 12 had a 75% or greater negative response from both faculty and staff. Additionally, both
