CHINESE STUDENTS ARE CURRENTLY the largest
international student population in the United States
(UNESCO Institute for Statistics, 2014). However, little
research exists on these particular students' lived
experiences with language and interactions with domestic
students and how these experiences affect their sense
of belonging in residence halls. This study illuminates
the experiences affecting ﬁrst-year Chinese international
students' sense of belonging and provides insights on how
these students perceive the interactions with domestic
students within their new collegiate "home."

residence life staff

Students from China comprise the largest group of international
students entering the United States within the past decade (Yan
& Berliner, 2010). Recently, ﬂow from China included over half a
million students, with 178,890 Chinese nationals enrolling in U.S.
institutions (UNESCO Institute for Statistics, 2014). Despite their
growing number, Chinese international students often feel marginalized since many do not feel a sense of belonging on their campuses (Lee, 2010; Sherry, Thomas, & Chui, 2010).

Sense of belonging is students' "psychological sense of identiﬁcation and afﬁliation with the campus community" (Hausmann,
Ye, Schoﬁeld, & Woods, 2009, p. 650). International students are
less likely than domestic students to feel afﬁliated and connected to
their campus because of cultural differences, which has academic
and social implications (Lee & Rice, 2007; Smith & Khawaja, 2011).
Chinese students, as members of a non-dominant population, are
at risk for being unsuccessful in college and may not persist to
graduation if they do not feel a sense of belonging to their community (Berger & Milem, 1999; Tinto, 1993). Understanding Chinese
international students' experiences in their residential environment is imperative for residence life staff to support these students
through academic and social aspects of college.
Community building and student learning are often at the heart
of residential programs, and residence halls are touted as the ideal
