Perceived Social Support and Roommate Status

Discussion Questions
1. Investigate the number and characteristics of the international students who attend your
college/university. Has your institution conducted any research on the experiences of these
students? If so, what do the data reveal? If not, how might you use this article to propose
that such research be conducted?
2. This article reinforced the challenges associated with language proﬁciency and Chinese
student residents' feelings of isolation and lack of belonging in U.S. cultures. The author
noted that Chinese students need specialized support. What ideas do you have for better
serving the needs of Chinese students in a residential environment? What resources can you
partner with on campus and within the community to better serve this population?
3. Identify strategies for engaging domestic students with international students in ways that
beneﬁt both student populations.
4. The author presents a clear case for using a qualitative methodology for collecting data
about Chinese international students' experiences. Discuss the merits and challenges of
this methodology as compared to a quantitative (i.e. survey) methodology for learning
about the experiences of international students who live in residence.
5. Based on this study, design a Resident Advisor/Assistant training program aimed at
improving RAs' abilities to support Chinese international students.
