Resident Assistant Mattering: Do Placement and Community Size Matter?

This study considered the perceived sense of mattering of RAs by comparing those working
in a (traditional) residence hall to those working in an apartment community. The former
group expressed a higher sense of mattering than the latter and the authors attributed this,
at least in part, to the staff-to-student ratio, with a lower ratio leading to a higher score on
all three components of mattering. What other variables (other than staff-to-student ratio)
might contribute to these results?

The authors acknowledge that the supervisory relationship can positively impact an RA's
sense of mattering and suggests one-on-one meetings as a way of doing this. What other
strategies might supervisors take to increase RAs' sense of mattering?

How might the construct of mattering be used with RAs in regard to their training on how to
engage students?

Retention is noted as a positive outcome when individuals feel they matter. Given that
retention within the RA role is limited by other factors, what are some other benefits to the
residential life program when RAs feel they matter?

The authors suggest further research on the relationship between a sense of mattering and
