PAR as Assessment Framework

Discussion Questions

1. How would you describe the current assessment methods of your department? If focused
on student satisfaction, what conditions and resources are needed to move toward an
outcomes-based assessment plan? How can you incorporate social justice as a pillar of
those student learning outcomes?
2. The case presented in this article highlighted the need for student voices to be incorporated
into the assessment practices. Which groups of students would you most likely want to
include in a collaborative project? How can you ensure that all student populations are
represented?
3. What are the opportunities and challenges related to students as researchers in your
assessment practices?
4. How can involvement in PAR-based assessment be leveraged to recruit student staff
members and full-time staff members?
5. Given the on-going, cyclical nature of PAR, what would need to change or stay the same in
your current assessment plan to make PAR possible in your department?
6. The article describes how assessment can be "situated as an act of social justice." What
other administrative processes can be framed or designed to center and meet the needs of
currently marginalized student populations?
