RESEARCH ON RESIDENT ASSISTANT BURNOUT peaked
in the 1980s, and there has been little scholarship since.
Much of the original literature is dated, and some contains
unresolved conflicts in the findings. Also, there is a glaring
gap in the literature, specifically in how burnout relates
to both RA job satisfaction and position departure. This
study sought to expand on and update the dated and
conflicting findings in RA burnout literature by surveying
RAs at four-year Midwestern institutions. Qualitative data
analysis assessed differences and explored relationships
between the study variables. The results revealed a lack
of difference in burnout dimensions among male and
female RAs, statistically significant differences in personal
accomplishment between community composition groups,
and significantly higher levels of depersonalization and
significantly lower levels of personal accomplishment in
RAs who chose not to return to their position. The results
also indicate that there is a significant inverse relationship
between each dimension of burnout and RA job satisfaction.
Recommendations for research and practice are shared.

Resident assistants (RAs) serve in a critical capacity on college and
university campuses (Elleven, Allen, & Wircenski, 2001). They have
a wide array of responsibilities associated with their jobs (Fotis,
2013; Jaeger & Caison, 2006), which creates challenges and causes
stress (Deluga & Winters, 1991; Fuehrer & McGonagle, 1988), thus
making the RA job difficult to perform well (Roussel & Elleven,
2009). The stress accompanying the varied, and sometimes conflicting, job responsibilities often leads to burnout (Hardy & Dodd,
1998; Paladino, Murray, Newgent, & Gohn, 2005).
