The demographic and background questionnaire gathered data about the RAs' gender,
race and ethnicity, and community composition. Since this study was not longitudinal in
nature, it was not possible to analyze actual
RA retention. Instead, the final subset of questions computed to a composite variable: employment choice. Traditionally, the RA position
requires a full academic year commitment;
thus, RAs who are unable to commit to the
full year-such as those who are graduating,
studying abroad one semester, or have military
deployment-are not offered a position the following year. Therefore, the employment choice
variable was coded into two categories: (a) RAs
who chose to return to their position the following academic year or would have chosen
to return if outside factors were not a concern;
and (b) RAs who chose not to return to their
position the following year or would have
chosen not to return if outside factors did not
prevent them from returning.
RESULTS
Descriptive Analysis
Of the 308 distributed surveys, 153 participants
responded with usable data (a response rate of
49.7%). Roughly a third (36.2%) identified as
male, and the rest (63.8%) identified as female.
One RA elected not to report a gender identity. No participants selected "another gender
identity." Participants identified themselves
as being in one of the following ethnic categories: Asian (5.4%), Black or African American
