METHOD
Participants
The survey was mailed to 800 chief housing
officers at institutions that are members of the
Association of College and University Housing
Officers-International. In the United States,
a total of 244 CHOs, or 31%, responded to
the survey. The majority of respondents had
between 6 and 15 years of experience in the
housing profession (see Table 1). Of the CHOs
responding, 127 (53%) were from public institutions and 114 (47%) were from private institutions. A geographic breakdown by ACUHO-I
regions shows CHOs in the Northeast providing the most responses (see Table 2). Table 3
reflects the housing capacity of the programs
overseen by the responding CHOs.

A nationwide survey of chief housing officers
was conducted to determine the level of importance CHOs place on specific competencies identified as necessary to becoming an
effective housing professional. The survey
instrument included the demographic information described above and 49 competencies
identified from a literature review (Ambler,
1990; Jahr, 1990; Ostroth, 1981; Piper & Fullerton, 1985; Rosenquist, Hildreth, & Farnsworth, 1976; Saidla, 1990; Taguding, 1985)
and from a meeting with the 17 professional
housing staff members at the University of
Florida. The 49 competencies were categorized as (a) administrative including personnel management, planning and projection,
and research skills; (b) developmental including communication skills, diversity awareness, and leadership and counseling skills;
