Competency Development of Housing Professionals

Results from this study have been used
to develop the National Housing Training Institute (NHTI). The NHTI has incorporated
competency assessment and development
into the instructional format using a competency model. The NHTI "faculty" direct the
competency assessment to each participant.
One faculty member works closely with three
assigned participants, to produce a 5-10 year
professional action plan developed to increase
competency in identified growth areas. This
systematic professional development assists
the housing professional in selecting the
best means (conferences, course work, seminars, etc.) to gain knowledge in previously
unattended competency areas. Housing professionals have professed the integration of
developmental theory in facilities and programs. They must now incorporate active
competency development into their professional development to enhance job mobility
