AS UNIVERSITY HOUSING OFFICES seek to maximize use of
their available beds, it is valuable to understand the factors
that are most important in influencing students to choose
to move off campus. This study compares importance
ratings on a wide range of housing factors for students
who planned to stay on campus and those who planned to
move off campus. Students staying on campus were more
likely to value the support of in-residence staff and the ease
of making friends with other students. Those moving off
campus were more likely to place importance on the cost of
housing, ability to have a single room or private bathroom,
availability of parking, ability to live in housing over break,
and ability to cook one's own meals. These findings can
assist institutions in determining which changes are likely to
positively affect on-campus retention.

Colleges and universities that offer student housing cannot guarantee that these resources will always be used at full occupancy.
Given the option, students may choose to live off campus; without
fully understanding the reasons students choose to do so, housing
administrators are less able to accurately anticipate retention
in housing or, if needed, to incentivize students to stay within
campus housing. Understanding what motivates a student to live
off campus rather than on campus can help housing administrators determine which factors are within the institution's control
and then take these factors into account when renovating existing
housing facilities or planning new ones, updating housing policies,
and marketing the amenities offered in campus housing.
Researchers would also benefit from a greater understanding
of why a student would choose to live on or off campus. According
to de Araujo and Murray (2010), studies trying to determine the
effect of on-campus living versus off-campus living on students'
grades, retention, or other factors often do not account for the differences in students who choose to live on or off campus. Knowing
what differentiates these two groups can help researchers control
administrators
are less able
to accurately
anticipate retention
in housing or,
if needed, to
incentivize
students to stay
within campus
housing .
