THE SEPARATION OF WORK AND LIFE creates unique
challenges for residence life professionals, given that they
often live in their place of work. The culture of this work
pushes such employees to integrate their work and personal
lives in ways that are not always healthy or fulfilling and
that frequently lead to burnout. This study sought to explore
these unique realities. The outcome presented here is a
new continuum model to better understand the work/life
balance strains of residential staff.

How is the balance between work and personal life impacted when
you live where you work? How do you have a personal life when
living in a residence hall, supervising housing professionals, and
supporting the development of college students? Studies have
shown that people who work primarily from home have varying
degrees of success regarding maintenance of boundaries, mainly
concluding that managing boundaries is problematic for those who
work primarily from home (Kylin & Karlsson, 2008; Myrie & Daly,
2009; Nippert-Eng, 1996a, 1996b). But what is at stake when individuals are not bringing their work home but are bringing their
outside lives to work?

One unexplored area of interest in work/life studies is how individuals manage boundaries when their home is also their workplace, such as in apartment communities, colleges and universities,
or military bases. Residence life professionals are a particularly
interesting population, as they often live alongside the staff and
students for whom they are responsible. These professionals are
charged with "creating environments and organizational structures
and other interventions that promote student development and education of residents; [they] maintain sufficient order to allow for adequate study, sleep and socializing; and [they] support the academic
mission of the institution" (Winston, Anchors, & Associates, 1993,
p. xxii). Residence life professionals are often in charge of "supervising, correlating, and integrating the activities of students who live
in campus-operated residence halls [and] typically . . . provide counseling services for students, plan programs, advise student govern-
