and to plan for future boundaries can help
create clear communication about expectations, needs, and opportunities. Introducing
the continuum as part of a standard employee
review process can bring the issue of work/life
boundary management to the forefront and
enable open dialogue around the topic.
All participants reported that trainings
for their positions did not include a specific
session on setting boundaries even though creating boundaries was crucial to their job. Some
of the participants reported that their supervisors would encourage them to take time off but
that the supervisor did not model the behavior,
and, as such, the participants reported they did
not feel comfortable taking time off. Residence
life professionals need to know which strategies they are currently using and what other
strategies they could add to their repertoires to
help them minimize boundary stressors and
increase their ability to resist their environment's inevitable push toward integration.
It is also imperative that residence life
staff trainings address the issue of boundary
management head on in order to allow staff
to acknowledge their own need for boundaries and personal spaces. Supervisors also must
be aware that their behavior, such as late night
emails and a lack of boundaries, creates an
integrative environment that potentially adds
stress to the workplace for reporting employees. The continuum could help facilitate these
conversations.
Based on this research, it would also be
helpful for residence life staff who live where
they work to be intentional about creating
opportunities to be away from campus. For
individuals who strongly lean toward integrative tendencies (as these staff do), obligatory

the boundary stressors . . .
