Ethnic Minority Student Success at a New Zealand University
Discussion Questions
1. The residential colleges at the University of Otago are very selective and often only accept
academically high-achieving students, and the cost of living in a residential college is very
high. How could your institution create a residential college with the same benefits while
also being accessible to all types of students?
2. This article discusses how the "residential colleges at Otago provide students a learning
community, peer support, and pseudo-parental guidance in their first year away from
home." What are some ways that housing/residence life at your institution support
under-represented groups?
3. How does your institution define success, and how does living on campus contribute
to that definition of success?
4. One of the benefits for Pacific students from residential colleges is that they have higher
grades than other students do. Are there other factors (besides the fact that they live in
a residential college) that could contribute to this success?
5. The authors provide suggestions about how a residential college experience positively
influences a Pacific student's experience, increasing their odds of persisting, returning,
and graduating. What factors do you believe contribute to and take away from a student's
positive experience? In what ways can we increase those positive factors and reduce
the limiting factors?
6. Do you believe this research is consistent with that about other minority groups who attend
your institution? What ways can you use this information to impact the experience of
minority groups in residential colleges (or something similar) at your institution?
