INTRODUCTION
Staff retention in student affairs is a concern for student affairs
professionals and for the organizations representing them. Research, symposia, as well as local and national conferences have
examined the issues of professional staff retention that impact
the field of student affairs (Holmes, Verrier, & Chisholm, 1983).
A survey of 372 persons who received graduate degrees in student
personnel/student development from 1970 to 1979, found that
39% had left the field (Burns, 1982). Bender (1980) reported that of
the 95 student affairs practitioners ages 23 to 36 who responded to
her NASPA Region II survey, 41% indicated they were undecided
about a future in student affairs, and 31% reported that they did not
intend to stay in student affairs. A study completed in 1981, of 131
master's of student personnel graduates since 1971 at an Eastern
university, revealed a gradual attrition from the (student personnel)
field as each year passed, reaching a 39% employment level by the
6th year (Holmes, Verrier, & Chisholm, 1983).
Many reasons for the difficulty of attracting and retaining professionals in student affairs have been explored and debated. The
need to introduce the field to undergraduates, to deal with new
professionals' expectations, to confront occupational factors that
promote burnout, and the need for "life-long" career development
have all been investigated (Carpenter & Miller, 1981; Evans, 1988;
Hancock, 1988). According to the Burns (1982) survey, the reasons
most often given for leaving the field were relocation (62%), returning to school (48%), and "not enough challenge/bored" (51%). As
Burns mentions, this last statistic should be of particular concern.
In her review of literature pertaining to attrition (from student
affairs), Evans (1988) found "lack of opportunity for advancement"
to be the most frequently mentioned reason for leaving the field.
Hancock (1988) discussed the concept of "work environment reinforcers" and the possible incongruence between the young student
affairs practitioners and their work environment. Several other
authors suggested the need for a closer look at issues such as salary,
level of responsibility, status, opportunities for advancement, and
the personal needs of student affairs professionals (Holmes, et al.,
1983; Wood, Winston, & Polkosnik, 1985).
Housing
professionals
have professed
the integration of
developmental
theory in facilities
and programs .
They must now
incorporate active
competency
development into
their professional
development
to enhance job
mobility and
marketability.
