In order to ease the transition between life at home and life on campus, the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, features a transition program for new students, says Lori Krawchuk, residence services administrative assistant. Beginning in April, prior to the move-in, incoming students can enroll in the university’s “T2U: Transition to University Student Workshop,” an online resource designed to help students prepare for the academic, social, emotional, and developmental challenges they may face when coming to the university, according to the T2U Web site. In a testimonial on this site, one University of Alberta student commented, “T2U is one of the greatest ideas ever. Using it in the summer allowed me to get familiar with everything that would be happening come first semester. By the Volunteers at Baylor University wait anxiously in a narrow stairwell to unload student belongings in the residence halls. BAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY time school started, I already felt very comfortable with the whole concept of university thanks to T2U. I think it’s something that should be accessible throughout a student’s entire education, not just in their first year.” Krawchuk explains that the university uses several other strategies to help ease this transition for students. They offer a number of orientation seminars; send students a copy of the Residence Handbook, which contains general information about living in the residence halls, important phone numbers, and community standards and guidelines; and provide information about campus activities and what to bring and what not to bring to campus.
