The feeling of satisfaction because you are organized – and the time saved when looking for an item – is its own reward. 9. Off the Beaten Path We all enjoy a sense of comfort knowing how to get from point A to point B, but in that process we might miss out on everything else surrounding it. So take a different route to work or your next meeting, and don’t let a few steps or two extra minutes in the car deter you from seeing something new – or seeing something routine in a whole new way. 10. Pop Culture Watch a television show (or podcast or Webisode) simply because you overhear your students talk about it. You may be frightened by what you see, or you may come up with a new guilty-pleasure addiction. Regardless, it’s great fodder for student conversations and connections. In the broader picture, connecting to pop culture provides the opportunity to meet students where they are. Understanding what’s new and on their minds provides multiple opportunities to listen and learn – as well as to key into possibilities for publicity campaigns and more. 11. Me and My Shadow Take a day and shadow a staff member in another student affairs office that you have little or no knowledge of. Learn how the boiler room works or how to process a housing bill.
