There Goes the Neighborhood The 21st Century Project continues to grow. What started as a summit of 100 student affairs personnel brainstorming the qualities and requirements of the residence hall of the future begat the 2007 design competition where entrants created innovative approaches to designing individual student rooms. For the second round, held last February in St. Petersburg, Florida, the entrants were asked to expand upon the idea of student “homes” and to begin to group them into halls or pods (referred to as “The Block”) as well as entire buildings (called “The Neighborhood”). As in the ﬁrst competition, none of the submitted designs were lacking in innovation and thought. The winners of the $25,000 prize were four designers employed by the ﬁrm of Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company. Working independently, and calling their proposal Net+Work+Camp+Us, Yang Tian, Suping Li, Yuzhu Zheng, and Nathan Herold created a forwardthinking design that captured the spirit of the 21st Century Project. Green roofs promote sustainability while living spaces feature built-in ﬂexibility to promote community. And the inclusion of large video screens for both security and personal expression belies the ever growing role technology will play in the future. Other ﬁnalists were the team of Mackey Mitchell Architects and University of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville that won the People’s Choice award. Ayers/Saint/Gross Architects + Planners was singled out by the jury for their innovative use of technology to foster community. MGA Partners of Philadelphia based their design on the college house concept as experienced at Harvard and Yale. And Little Diversiﬁed Architectural Consulting of Charlotte, North Carolina, closely integrated their buildings with the surrounding environment, utilizing green roofs, interior gardens, and even an apple orchard. New at this year’s event was the inclusion of a product showcase. The winner, as voted by the design showcase attendees, was the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development. Partnering with Treanor Architects P.A. as well as Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company, they are creating an 850,000square-foot housing complex. This community will maximize energy efﬁciency and water use and will also utilize wind turbines, photovoltaic cells, and a biomass wall for ﬁltering gray water. All of this will be part of their effort to construct the world’s ﬁrst U.S. Green Building Council-certiﬁed LEED platinum student residence halls. 70 Talking Stick The most recent 21st Century Project design competition generated yet more groundbreaking approaches to the student residence hall of the future. by James A.
