Talking Stick - May/June 2008 - (Page 9) GROUND gs breakin Competition Nurtures the Entrepreneurial Spirit Until March 15, when the competition ended, any college student within the United States who had a business Web site could enter the StartupNation Dorm-Based 20 Competition. Living on campus was not a requirement of the competition, though many past winners have been students that were living in the halls. The winner(s) of the competition were judged on the following criteria: innovativeness of business concept, potential for growth, cuttingedge business practices, potential for overall impact, and financial performance. Winners will receive national publicity in the media – TV, radio, online and print publications – as well as bragging rights. They will be able to display a Dorm-Based 20 Winners Emblem that they can put on their business Web site and on e-mails stating that they were one of the top 20 college-based businesses for 2008. Bragging rights indeed. At the time of publication, this year’s winner(s) had not been announced yet, but they certainly will be ones to keep an investing eye on. They may climb to success similar to other companies, such as Dell and Facebook, born in a residence hall room. To view winner profiles, go to www.startupnation.com/dorm. Elmira College Elmira, New York Projected Opening: Late 2010 • Cost: $35 million After five years of planning, the college has decided that the new 140-bed residence hall will be designed in the traditional, collegiate Gothic-style architecture to blend in with the rest of the campus buildings. The coed residence hall will have semi-private bathrooms, air conditioning, a workout room, laundry facilities, and plenty of common space, including study rooms, meeting and seminar rooms, and two music practice rooms. The University of Texas at Dallas Richardson, Texas Projected Opening: Late 2009 • Cost: $20 million This state-of-the-art residence hall will house 400 students in three-bedroom, one-bath units or one-bedroom, one-bath units for peer advisers. The hall will also have seven units for students with disabilities. The four-story, 148,000-square-foot facility will offer living-learning environments, a full-service laundry facility, a courtyard with outdoor recreation amenities, a 200-space parking lot, plenty of open-air study lounges, and a first-floor kitchen with a sink, stove, and dishwasher. Purdue University Calumet Hammond, Indiana Projected Opening: August 2009 • Cost: $16 million Driven partially by the increase in international student enrollment, the residence hall will house 369 students in 99 apartment-style suites. The units range from furnished four-bedroom suites to large two-bedroom suites with a semi-private bathroom, a kitchen, dining room, and living room. In conjunction with the university’s effort to build a sense of community on campus, the L-shaped residence hall will enclose a courtyard suitable for intramural activities. Fordham University Bronx, New York Projected Opening: June 2010 • Cost: $78 million In response to a survey of the housing community, and with juniors and seniors in mind, the university is constructing two new sevenstory residence halls. They will house 460 students in four- and sixperson apartment-style units with single and double bedrooms. The facilities, which are the first residence halls to be built since 2000, will encompass 166,000 square feet and will meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver certification standards.
