Talking Stick - May/June 2008 - (Page 92) Reporting Out Reports and news from independent regional and national organizations and other groups with news relevant to ACUHO-I professionals The 2007-08 Administrative Compensation Survey, a report recently released by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR), has indicated an increase in median base salary of 4 percent for senior level administrators in higher education. This is the same as last year’s increase. Data was collected from 1,307 institutions, 11 job categories, and 272 selected positions (mostly at director level and above) and their reported salaries. Half of the survey participants were from public institutions and half were from private institutions. According to the survey, salary increases for most jobs were slightly greater at public institutions than they were at private institutions, especially for those in athletics positions. The overview of salary increases was based on the institution’s affiliation, budget size, and enrollment. To view the survey results in their entirety, go to CUPA-HR’s home page at www.cupahr.org and click on “Salary Surveys 2008.” CUPA-HR Releases Annual Salary Survey ACUTA Surveys Chargeback Methods The Association for Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education (ACUTA) recently surveyed attendees at their annual winter seminars, where cost allocation was a key topic. The survey focused on voice and data network costs, and the results showed room for improvement. On a scale of 1 to 5, respondents gave their chargeback systems an overall rating of 2.92. Eighty percent of respondents thought allocation of data costs needed the most improvement, while 72 percent felt that new technologies such as wireless networking and Internet telephony lacked the most consideration. Over half of the attendees considered the biggest problems to be outside the actual system, centered more on the cooperation of departments and administration. Results showed an evident desire for network costs to match developing technology and communication needs. “As networks continue to converge, the issue of charging costs back is much more complex now than it has been traditionally, and ACUTA members understand that need,” says Jeri Semer, executive director of ACUTA, in a press release. “Clearly, the results of this survey show that information communication professionals see the shortcomings of their current systems and are pushing to improve them as soon as possible.” Improvements are overdue according to attendees, with 64 percent using systems that are at least five years old, and over half expecting an upgrade in the next year. Results showed that the most desired benefits of a new system would be to provide more accurate cost-ofservice data, fairer allocation of service costs, and better ongoing analysis of the cost environment.
