Talking Stick - July/August 2008 - (Page 11) Company Sheds Light on Energy-Savings Program With 22 percent of electricity used in the U.S. to power lighting, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, revolutions in lighting are taking place all over the country. Cree, Inc., a leader in light-emitting-diode (LED) lighting, launched their new LED University program this spring. The program allows universities from all over the world to evaluate, promote, and deploy LED lighting on their campus. According to a press release from Cree, this community of universities will not only accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient LEDs, but will also increase energy savings, protect the environment, reduce maintenance costs, and provide better light quality for visibility and safety. The initial participant was North Carolina State University in Raleigh; their commitment is based on a strong preexisting relationship with the company, as Cree was in fact founded by NC graduates. Also participating in the program by using LED lighting in offices, residence halls, and parking garages and on walkways and streets on campus are Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; the University of California at Santa Barbara; the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville; and Tianjin Polytechnic University in China. Each of the universities conducts the pilots and determines costs and benefits of the LED lighting. Cree is a manufacturer of lightingclass LEDs. They offer LED lighting retrofit solutions and semiconductor solutions for backlighting and for wireless and power applications. E ver been in a meeting with colleagues from offices across campus and someone asks you, “What are the benefits of living on campus?” Well, now you can have an answer at hand with the resources below offered by ACUHO-I librarian Emily Glenn. She has scanned several higher education journals and Web sites that devote their research (or part of it) to the benefits of living in residence halls and enticing students to come back the next year. Read through these suggested studies and articles, and go to that next meeting prepared with an answer that will knock their socks off.
