Drexel University Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Projected Opening: August 2009 • Cost: $42 million The 34th Street Residence Hall will be 120,000 square feet and 17 stories tall. Its innovative twisting design allows the building to fit into the small site and still house 482 students. The building will be the new focal point of the residential quadrant, with skyline views and a “green roof,” which is covered in vegetation to improve energy performance. Western Carolina University Cullowhee, North Carolina Projected Opening: July 2009 and July 2010 • Cost: $50.2 million With admissions increasing by 60 percent this year, Western Carolina University started construction on two new residence halls. The 235,000-square-foot halls will house 801 students, including the Honors College and the Teaching Fellows Program. A $17 million dining hall and student recreation center will be built next to the new dorms, forming a quadrangle around the lawn for student use. Carleton College Northfield, Minnesota Projected Opening: September 2009 • Cost: $22 million Two new residence halls will house a total of 230 students. The first building will include suite-style units designed for upperclassmen, and the second will have the more traditional dorm-style units. Both buildings will have private and public kitchens, study spaces, and lounges. The second building will include a student café and a game room in the basement. The halls are pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) levels of either Gold or Silver. The new residence halls are meant, in part, to encourage returning students to live in on-campus housing. This August, Jacksonville State University in Alabama will be opening its Leadership House for Women, the first in a series of planned on-campus living and learning communities. Applications for the 2008-2009 academic year were open to all female upperclassmen with demonstrated leadership and involvement on campus and a GPA of 2.5 or above. Of the candidates, 16 women will be chosen to live in the house. While they are residents of the Leadership House, students are required to complete at least 30 hours of community service each semester. They will also have the opportunity to participate in monthly group discussions featuring various female leaders in the area. The building is located in Paul Carpenter Village, the university’s Fraternity Row. It is currently being used as the Panhellenic House but will be refreshed with new interior and exterior paint before its new residents arrive. Rochelle Smith, assistant director of university housing and residence life at JSU, says that the Leadership House is an amazing opportunity for students: “We hope that the house will benefit women that aspire to become better leaders not only on campus, but in the community as well.” The next living and learning community at JSU will focus on freshmen in an effort to help them build faculty relationships and make an easier transition to campus life.
