Vision Keeping Campus Safe and Secure In response to the heightened awareness of safety and security issues, campuses worldwide have strengthened their prevention and preparation efforts and have encouraged the participation of housing officers. Institutions have made multimillion dollar purchases to improve their emergency response plans so they can ensure immediate, widespread communication with students, faculty, staff, and parents. Institutions, along with their housing officers, have held active shooter exercises, established emergency operations centers, conducted campus-wide mock drills, developed threat assessment teams, added night security programs, and developed multiagency and inter-institutional assistance agreements. The issue of gun control has become increasingly problematic on U.S. campuses. Recently, the Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and for hunting, striking down the District of Columbia’s 32-year ban on handguns. In the meantime, campuses have worked hard to establish weapons policies that are exceptions to other state and federal laws, and at many colleges and universities these policies are more restrictive in campus housing than they are for the institution. The new gun ruling weakens the efforts to keep campuses safe, according to FBI Director Robert Mueller, who, in a speech at the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, stated that college campuses and small communities could be “potential incubators of terrorism.” ACUHO-I will continue to provide members with news and services to assist them in developing policies and procedures as well as identifying products to help maintain the safety and security of campus housing. We have increased the number of conference program presentations, produced a crisis management Webinar, been involved in the wording of potential legislative bills, generated position papers to passed legislation, and clarified news releases from the various media outlets, all in response to these issues. Our campus housing mission continues to include providing an environment where students can grow and learn, one that is conducive to academic success and responsive to our many academic initiatives – and one that is safe. This issue of the Talking Stick will provide you with information to use as you consider the safety and security of campus housing.
