Elevator pits are traditionally low points in buildings and thus likely to be immediately affected by flooding. The fact that elevator cars suck air with them as they move up and down, creating a vacuum effect, can result in additional problems, causing mold or even e-coli to become airborne. Aaberg worried about what could be accomplished in even this part of the recovery process in only 44 days: “We had to encapsulate the wood in the cars because they absorbed moisture. Optimally, we would have liked to replace the cars, but it wasn’t feasible in the short time frame.” Due to the magnitude and timing of the natural disaster, receiving supplies was an unexpected problem. Aaberg had to send parts halfway across the country to be reconditioned or repaired. Brantley had to compete with other institutions that were also trying to recover from the hurricane and were requesting the same parts and contacting the same vendors. The four elevators impacted by the flood at the University of Iowa were among 400 in central Iowa’s flood plain that needed repair or replacement. Brantley and Aaberg note that a critical part of the recovery process is responding to parental concerns about the environmental health of the buildings. Tulane used their expertise to craft a strong message. “We told them what we did to repair or replace ventilation and other systems,” says Brantley. “We assured them that the buildings were cleaner and healthier places than prior to the flood.” Students were invited back to campus in November to retrieve their belongings and to see the buildings. According to Brantley, those parents who visited were more comfortable with sending their students back. Senior administrators, faculty, and staff also played a large role by hosting town hall meetings in central cities where students lived to discuss what work was being done to bring Tulane back in operation. Iowa contacted all future Mayflower residents and their parents with the message that cleanliness and air quality was of utmost concern and that the buildings were cleaner and healthier than before the flood.
