Talking Stick - January/February 2009 - (Page 42) On your Honor At Clemson, the student government identified three core values for the student body: integrity, honesty, and respect. Much like the Auburn Creed, Clemson’s core values define what it is to be a member of the Clemson community, and this means not only embodying the values but also challenging anyone who falls short of the ideal. As Smith sees it, core values allow students an effective way “to understand their role in the community, accepting responsibility for their actions, and developing a sense of pride” within the campus community. role models Housing professionals may sometimes find themselves in the awkward position, while challenging or adjudicating a student for an infraction, of having to judge their own past selves, confronting someone for a violation they themselves committed when they were students. The situation can feel hypocritical, but that doesn’t release them from the responsibility – as an adult who has learned from past mistakes and as a professional who must lead by example – for acting as a role model. A feeling of awkwardness can actually be more of a strength than a hindrance: It’s easier to identify with the offenders and to understand what’s at stake for them. Acting as a partner with students in recognizing their impact on the community is a much more effective role than serving as administrator of a system that is blind to a student’s individuality. As Turner expresses it, “We are all human and we all have a skeleton or two,” but how housing professionals use these experiences determines whether or not they are effective hearing officers. Resident assistants, desk workers, and graduate hall directors are live-in leaders. They offer a conduit through which resident students can be reached and influenced in genuine, often subtle, ways. Student staff who model positive, healthy, and altruistic behaviors have the opportunity to catalyze an educational experience within their respective buildings and, through partnership with other campus constituents, within the entire campus community.
