Talking Stick - March/April 2009 - (Page 12) Just in By The nUMBers Each year the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles captures a statistical snapshot of the freshmen at United States four-year colleges and universities. Along with the demographic information, the survey — which this year received responses from more than 240,000 students from 340 campuses — asks about politics, religion, race, income, and more (basically all those things you’re not supposed to ask about). In the survey almost 72 percent of the respondents identified themselves as white/Caucasian, while 11.3 percent identified themselves as African-American, 8.8 percent as Asian or Asian-American, and almost 6 percent as Mexican-American/Chicano. Also, 70 percent reported that both their parents were alive and living with each other, and almost 32 percent estimated their parents’ income to be between $75,000 and $150,000. Finally, when it comes to staying close to mom and dad, more than one-quarter of those surveyed chose to go to school less than 50 miles from their permanent home, while 14 percent traveled more than 500 miles to reach campus.
