Talking Stick - March/April 2009 - (Page 15) The Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio Fred Fotis is the new assistant vice president and chief housing officer. Fotis brings to the job 33 years of experience in student housing at six colleges and universities. Since 2001, he has been senior director of student services at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, where his responsibilities, in addition to student housing, have included overseeing the student health center, counseling, child care, Greek-letter societies, and university chaplaincy. Previously, he served as director of housing at Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania (1992-2000), director of residence life at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia (1985-1992), and director of resident services at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion (1980-1985). He also held student housing positions at Elmhurst College in Illinois and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Fotis has served on several ACUHO-I committees and has been treasurer of the ACUHO-I Foundation Board since 1999. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973 and a master’s degree in education in 1975, both from Indiana University in Bloomington. in the United States. She originally came to the University of Florida in 1990 as assistant director of housing for the Tolbert Area after working at the State University of New YorkCortland and Florida State University in Tallahassee. Diekow currently serves as president of the Southeastern Association of Housing Officers (SEAHO). She has presented numerous international and regional programs, taught in the College of Education, served as a faculty member for the ACUHO-I STARS College, and assisted in coordinating the ACUHO-I James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute from 1991 to 2000. Azfar Mian has been promoted to director of housing for administrative services. Mian will supervise the offices of graduate and family housing assignments, residence hall assignments, computer systems, network administration, customer service, and financial counseling. Mian came to the University of Florida in 2004 after serving as interim director of residence services at Kent State University in Ohio. While there, he oversaw an operation of 7,000 beds with an operating budget of $25 million. While at UF, Mian has authored several book chapters, served as faculty for the ACUHO-I Chief Housing Officer Institute, taught in the College of Education, and presented numerous international and regional programs. He now also serves as the technology director for the division of student affairs and as chair of the ACUHO-I Technology Implementation Task Force. She will supervise the offices of residential community standards, academic initiatives and enhancement, residence hall RLE, and graduate and family RLE, as well as coordinating all departmental crisis management. Previously, she was the associate director for residence life and education and had advanced the unit’s staffing organization, crisis management protocols, community standards, and academic initiatives into some of the most contemporary March + april 2009 15
