Talking Stick - March/April 2009 - (Page 29) residence halls. “The program focuses on money management and how to be responsible with credit,” states Jessica Ballweg, a residence director in Tower Hall. “We also have a program called ‘Money Savvy Cats’ that is organized by the vice president of the student affairs office.” This program, a collection of money-saving tools, is available online; like the courses on personal finance or media clips about the latest consumer topics, it’s right at the students’ fingertips. There are many online resources available for students; some of the most visited and referenced ones are the following: MyMoney.gov — This site is devoted to financial literacy for anyone. There is a section on education that focuses on how to budget for school expenses, how to pay off acuho-i jan 09.pdf 1 21/01/09 college debt, and how to find the most money possible through scholarships and loans while in school. Students.UseCreditWisely.com — This site has great information on the ABC’s of credit cards. There are tools that help students budget for college and university expenses, information on how credit cards work, and tips on how to prevent identity theft. College.gov — This site has basic information on how to obtain financial aid and tips for how to avoid debt while in school. It is a very interactive and useful site. Undoubtedly the cost of higher education and the burden of student debt will continue to increase in the years to come. Students will need to be 9:00 AM educated about how school can be paid for and the long-term effects of debt accumulation. With the educational help of student affairs and academia, paying off a term of school for the average student will be done in 5-10 years instead of 10-15.
